Mark Twain National Forest Looking For Input on Sinking Creek Tower Cabin Rental Fee

Doniphan, Mo. Ð Mark Twain National Forest is looking for public input on a proposal to charge $50 per night to use Sinking Creek Tower Cabin. The historic cabin is on Eleven Point Ranger District, in Carter County, on Forest Road 3152 off J Highway. The one bedroom, cabin, recently restored, once was used by Forest Service employees and their families.

The fire lookout tower, though no longer used, still stands near the cabin. The cabin and tower were built by Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.

Recreation opportunities are plentiful in the area. The cabin is on the "Between the Rivers" section of a National Recreation Trail, the Ozark Trail. The cabin is about 4 miles north of the Irish Wilderness, and 8 miles northeast of the Eleven Point Wild and Scenic River.

The cabin will sleep up to 6 people; has bunk beds, electricity, heat, vault toilet, picnic table and fire ring. There is no drinking water.

Eighty percent of the proposed fee would be used for continued maintenance of the cabin site.

Once Mark Twain National Forest has considered public input on this proposal, the proposed fee must be reviewed and approved by a Regional Recreation Advisory Committee and Regional Forester in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

In June 2010, the cabin will be placed on the National Reservation System, where it can be reserved in advance.
